After all, if every economic issue is framed as a struggle between a hard-working white middle class and undeserving minorities, then workers of all shades will be left fighting for scraps while the wealthy withdraw further into their private enclaves - Barack Obama

Buhari the incumbent and Atiku the main challenger are standard bearers for the APC and PDP parties respectively.

Obasanjo has thrown his support to his former VP Atiku. If you recall, they had fallen out and OBJ backed Governor Yar’Adua of Sokoto for the presidency. It seems after he left office, everyone OBJ has supported has won the presidency. Apart from Yar’Adua, OBJ endorsed backed Goodluck Jonathan, and then Buhari. OBJ has blasted Buhari for incompetence, advised him to go back to school, and not run again. As expected, Buhari didn’t accept the advise. As an aside, octogenarian OBJ recently bagged his PhD.

Will OBJ’s backing help multimillionaire (perhaps billionaire) Atiku win next year’s election?

Obassanjo's  support will most probably give Atiku a win. Atiku , a wealthy Fulani  from Adamawa will divide the Hausa Fulani vote. It now depends on whether he picks a vice president from the East or West of Nigeria or If the Ibo will vote for him as they have not a full Ibo presidential candidate yet. Buhari has lost the  support of the powerful  senator Saraki. Hopefully, Buhari will keep his yoruba Vice President. All this makes a difference in Nigerian ethnic politics.

Time will tell.

As expected Atiku (PDP) picked a strong Igbo politician as his running mate.
If Atiku appears to be gaining strength with the electorate at Buhar’s (APC) expense, expect increased numbers of APC bigwigs jumping ship to PDP. Atiku himself had jumped ship to APC and contested for the presidential nomination, losing out to Buhari. He came third.

The election is going to be very interesting.
