Sir,with all due respect, there are more mundane issues facing the nation that should be receiving our attention and centainly,"MENDE STUPIDITY" is not one of them and I will earnestly appeal to you to drop the matter entirely as the less of human who spewed such sickening proposition suffers from the terminal cancer of the morass of ignorance which no education on thie face of this planet will cure.
The likes of their less of humans are reasons why carnage was visited upon the nation and you have a president in Sierra Leone who pretends not to hear or read about such sickening comment especially from a less of a human he has just openly welcomed into his party.
Again,I cannot stress enough the need to entirely drop this discussion of "MENDE STUPIDITY" as it is making Bintumani forum looks like a place that condones ethnic bashing no matter how reprehensible and morally repugnant.

EBK did not do anything. The program was aired live on SLBC TV. Sylvia Blyden is just a pathological liar. EBK missed an oppurtunity to put Coachie in his place. No one did anything to correct Mansaray's assertion.

Stop monkeying this issue. You cannot tar the president with your ridiculous brush. Ernest Koroma does not have a bone of tribalism in his body, as opposed to Brigadier you-know-who! So stop projecting your darkness.

Please forgive my cousin Ibrahim Zulu Odegbami Arionakankanfo aka Coachie. He has apologized for his mistake. I sincerely believe he got carried away by the occasion as he stated. I believe he probably meant to condemn the delegates who did not vote for his favorite candidate Usu Boie. Lets be honest Usu himself blamed ' mende' tribalism for his loss in his Railway Compound speech even though the facts contradicts that position. I strongly disagree with the politics of Daddy Ramanu ( Tiday you dae ya tomarah you dae so) whether practiced by my friend JEL or my cousin Coachie. I want to add my voice to the apology. We baeg.  He simply just got carried away trying to prove his APC bonafides a la Lansana Fadika.

EBK = tribalism in Salone
Reply with quote #10
But EBK himself is a rabid tribalist. Check his MD days at RITCORP - not a single S/ Easterner was employed... or  his current cabinet composition...
or his acquiescence of the tribal revolt against the Catholic Church in his home constituency, Makeni... or his appointment of Karefa Kargbo as
Minister of Oil in waiting (Ekutayism) - in his tribal thoughts - the most lucrative Ministry which must be headed by a Limba cousin. EBK's closeness with notorious tribal crooks like Apha Kanu and cocaine kingpin Kemoh Sesay is another verymatter  significant proof of his tribalistic nature.  His support for the premeditated purging of the civil service on strictly tribal affiliations is not only a testament of his poor leadership acumen but a precursor to the most dangerous tribal game he is playing  - the "Huturisation" of  Salone. Sadly 'decent' folks like Fen Plaba, KL and BT have bought into this crap.

We should like to hear more of this kind of talk and look forward to a time when some Mende tribalist or rap artist can call the Limbas, Temnes, Mandinka, Fullah, Creoles and others ethnic groups, " my niggas" without intending or causing any offence.

PS.

As the hysteria about the politics of tribalism grows ever more strident especial about Mende-ism, I should juts like to make this statement, because I feel that it is necessary to do so at this time:

I have liked ( loved some) and respected every single Mende person that I have ever met in my life, and this without exception. Which means every person who identified him/herself as Mende to me and those I knew were Mende., e.g. S.E Rogers.

Over here I miss e.g. Michael Kamara ( formerly Stockholm, London) but most of all I miss that most wonderful Chronicler and raconteur of tall, long or shorti stories, WINSTON THOMAS!!!!!

Recently during a discussion about Ghanaian politics, some Ghanaians told me they were die-hard supporters of Nana Akufo-Addo (an Ashanti) the NPP Presidential candidate in the December 7, 2012 elections. "You are all Ashantis" I asked. They all responded in the affirmative. They said they were surprised I knew and asked how I knew. Not wanting to make them feel their support was based on ethnic considerations, I gave them some other reason for my query.

It is very common for people to support a party based on regional, ethnic, religious and other considerations. I don't see any cause for alarm. It's human nature. What is important is that we have reasonably free and fair elections with violence largely kept in check.

I grew up with Ibrahim Mansaray, popularlyknown as Brima Zulu, now Coachie. We played soccer when and everywhere aroundthe Hagan Street - Mabayla- Guard Street corridor in the east-end of Freetown.Growing up in this neighborhood was a blast for me and all the other kids Igrew up with. There was no tribal, regional divide to worry about as thediversity around us was a strength rather than a weakness.

Ibrahim Mansaray was a very innocent laidback guy who hardly said much not to talk about offending someone. He was asoccer maestro, especially being a natural left winger and loved the gamepassionately. He was not the most brilliant guy in the room, but quietly went aboutdoing the things he loved, with the encouragement and support of his greatfamily; mum, dad and beautiful sisters.

Brima Zulu and family were very strongmembers of the APC party in those days, especially when it came to voting fortheir favorite candidate for the East 11 parliamentary seat Mr. Bun Mansaray vs.Mr. Manso Dumbuya who were arch rivals for the seat. Off course, Hon. BunMansaray will always get the nomination to run under the APC one party systemas he had the blessing of then vice president S.I. Koroma.

It was therefore a surprise for me when Ilater learned that Brima Zulu was a strong member of the SLPP, to the point ofbeing their Young Generation Leader. He was very strategic in this position anddid a marvelous job promoting the message of the SLPP in a neighborhood that is90% APC.

He must have been really elated at theopportunity that presented itself in the candidacy of Usu Boie Kamara for theflag bearer ship nomination of the SLPP for the 2012 general elections. UsuBoie Kamara was a role model to all of us teenagers as well as kids that grewup in this neighborhood. He was the kind of guy one would have loved to grow upto be, as he was not only just the most accomplished academic from theneighborhood, but hailed from a family that personified success and prestige, laced with humility and conservatism. To therefore work for someone who wasyour childhood hero for the potential position of the highest office of theland, especially from a poor, deprived and needy neighborhood like the one wegrew up in was an opportunity every potential politician and ambitiousindividual will eagerly embrace.

To have then worked your butt off for yourcandidate to win such a contest, but fell short by a very small margin is tosay the least frustrating. I can understand why someone like Brima Zulu willexpress his frustration at the SLPP delegates that denied his favoritecandidate the golden opportunity to head the SLPP ticked to the finaldestination of the presidency of the country. The anger though should have beenaddressed internally within the SLPP family, as the party had put mechanisms inplace to take care of the fallout of this long drawn out competition. It wastherefore disappointing that candidate Boie Kamara have not just refused toaccept the result of the democratic process, but have even turned the wholeprocess on its head by leaving the SLPP, to pitch tent with the APC andpresident Koroma for that matter; the man whose job he was running for. Thistype of behavior by a politician is not only distasteful, but ugly, incendiaryand corrupt.

There is no excuse however for Brima Zulu’s alias“Coachie’s characterization of “mendes as stupid”. It  is a bone headed mistake, even if he did it inthe heat of a tough debate about the reason for his candidates joining of theAPC party. I therefore wholeheartedly accept his apology to the mende people asit is a sincere apology and will appeal to my mende folks to do likewise andput this episode behind us. I know Brima Zulu, and will unambiguously say thathe has no anti-mende animosity in his bones.

The sentiment that mendes voted for JuliusMaada Bio and denied Usu Boie Kamara the nomination on tribal grounds ispervasive in the Boie Kamara camp. It is the “bogie man” that they are using tojustify their candidates decision to switch to the APC. What a cap out! Thisthinking is baseless, unfounded and inconveniently loose. It is because theSLPP as a political construct is strategic and forward thinking in theirdeliberations on the political decision making of national matters. They votedfor Lansana Fadika as the western area chairman basically on strategic grounds.Lansana Fadika was younger than his most competitive contestant Mr. MansoDumbuya. He also had international experience, having lived in Atlanta, in the UnitedStates before relocating back to Sierra Leone, not to talk about being a dualUS and Sierra Leonean citizen.

They voted for Ibrahim Mansaray aliasCoachie as their young generation leader in the western area because he was ayoung entrepreneur who had a very strong grass root understanding of theday-to-day struggle of young people in particularly the eastern parts ofFreetown. He is hardworking and enjoyed working with young people. These twofine Sierra Leoneans are not Mendes, they are Sierra Leoneans.

It was this same sense of offeringopportunity to people with responsibility that they brought to bear on the flagbearer ship elections. Usu Boie without equivocation was academically the bestcandidate in the race. He was however with the history of former presidentKabbah’s stewardship of the SLPP, the weakest candidate to run against aMachiavellian, rogue, manipulating incumbent APC party and candidate in ErnestBai Koroma. It was no accident therefore that the APC and its apologists werelicking their chops when they learnt that Usu Boie Kamara was going to win thenomination, because it was very easy to make a strong viable case against anUsu Boie Kamara candidacy to the mende people in particular and the SierraLeonean people at large.

The case the APC had prepared for thedefeat of Usu Boie was simply: that the SLPP leadership has developed the habitof working against the patriotic interest of the mende people, and by inferencethe Sierra Leonean people. That they denied full blood mendes the leadershipposition- namely: Julius Maada Bio, late Dr. Kagbindi Soyie, Major SenguKoroma, and off course Jam Bodie J. B. Dauda, and instead gave the leadershipto president Kabbah’s nephew Mr. Usu Boie Kamara. Usu Boie Kamara according totheir doctrine like former president Kabbah is not a real Sierra Leonean and avote against president Koroma whose running mate would have been J.B. Daudawould have been an anti-mende vote and by inference an anti-Sierra Leonean vote.

This narrative, as wicked, unprofessionaland un-Sierra Leonean as it would have been, would have sold like hot cake andpotato in the Southeast, and thus split the Southeastern vote for an easyre-election of incumbent president Koroma.

The candidacy of the indefatigable JuliusMaada Bio threw a spanner in the cork of such a message, and thus the anger, vile and toxic opposition of the Maada Bio candidacy within the APC.

So to my friend Ibrahim Mansaray aliasBrima Zulu or Coachie, no! the mende people who voted for Maada Bio to thedefeat of your favorite candidate Mr. Usu Boie are not stupid, nor are theentire mende people stupid for voting and supporting Brigadier Julius Maada Bioto be the next president of Sierra Leone. They are instead very strategic, theyhave the feel and temperament of the national interest.

Ibrahim my friend take it from me. You arealways going to be welcomed in the SLPP whenever you deem it fit to return, asit is the only party in the history of Sierra Leone that will promote theinterest of the entire country without fear or favor.

@ Dr. JM of Edwards fame: Where have you been all this time?
Couple of questions for you before you run off into the safety of peeperdom.

1. You wrote "Usu Boie without equivocation was academically the bestcandidate in the race". While he had impressive academic credentials and obtained a national scholarship after his A-Level results came out, on what basis did you arrive at this conclusion?

2. You wrote "He was however with the history of former presidentKabbah’s stewardship of the SLPP, the weakest candidate to run against aMachiavellian, rogue, manipulating incumbent APC party and candidate in ErnestBai Koroma. It was no accident therefore that the APC and its apologists werelicking their chops when they learnt that Usu Boie Kamara was going to win thenomination, because it was very easy to make a strong viable case against anUsu Boie Kamara candidacy to the mende people in particular and the SierraLeonean people at large....". What evidence do you have for these assertions? Any insider information? Why didn't they use that argument when ATK a Madingoe was running for President?

Mr. Spectator,

I hope you will accept my views on the second question despite not being Dr. John Mannah.  Tejan Kabbah and Usu Boie Kamara may be Mandigoes on the basis of the fact that their fathers hailed from that ethnic group.  But Tejan Kabbah is different in the sense that he was born and raised in Kailahun of a Mende mother. This makes ATK a southeasterner.

The argument that you alluded to could not have been raised against ATK by the APC because Mendes embraced ATK as their own.  Added to this are the facts that ATK speaks Mende better than he does Mandigo, is a blood relative of some Mendes in the SLPP leadership, and is childhood friends of guys like Sama Banya (Puawui).  Thus, despite the characterization of ATK as a Northerner, we in Kailahun regard him as our own.  These facts were known to the APC.  Hence their silence as far as ATK's background was concerned.

Thank you Sir, Dr. Mannah for standing up and letting folks get an adequate background of my cousin. It is interesting that i almost asked of you what you have exactly done. I have not seen a post from you for a while so i was not sure whether it would have been fair to make that request. You added a perspective even i as his cousin did know because you certainly knew him better than i did. Once more thank you. I believe he certainly appreciates this as this ' boneheaded' comment of his has caused him a lot of anguish.

It is refreshing to read from someone that Tejan Kaba is a Southeasterner and not a Northerner. For our Mende brothers who thinks otherwise, you should not be surprised at the unfortunate remarks made by Coachie, a man whom so much has been said about by TOOM.

I have been busy with the normal vicissitudes of life, but have often times peeped on Bintumani to enjoy some of the serious debates that are shaping up towards the 2012 presidential and parliamentary elections in our beloved country. Bintumani being an anonymous forum, I have contributed in shaping some of the debates, especially those that have interested me to the point of provoking the political animal in me.

Gahinteh - Thanks for your sentiments. Just thinking about Brima Zulu, Borkuboh his brother, Foday, and Dauda his  cousins, brings a lot of good memories about the good things we had as teenagers growing up in that area. The values of that area shaped the man I am today, and I will not change anything if I were to do it all over  again. Happy to know that you have a very fine cousin and glad that our world's have converged.

I must give a shout out to my dear friend TOOMS. How de body man? I have seen you weigh in here once in a while.

Now some answers to Spectator 007's  questions.

1.     I thought Usu Boie Kamara on the merit was the most qualified and prepared candidate to run as flag bearer for the SLPP nomination. This intuition is not only based on his academic qualifications, which is stellar to say the least, but due to his over 30 yrs practical work experience and consultancy as mining engineer in S/Leone and around the world, plus his money did not hurt him. His story is also very compelling, especially the fact that he is the first generation of S/Leonean politicians who lifted themselves by their own bootstrap through share grit, determination and hard work. He was not part of the crop of lying politicians that have contributed to the ruin and strangulation of the country over the years. His record in order words was clean.

Unlike Boie Kamara, former president TejanKabbah was nominated and elected to the presidency     in 1996 because he was at the right place at the right time when the country needed somebody of his pedigree and capability. His international expertise was what the country needed in their leader at that time. This is a different time altogether.

In an ideal world, Boie Kamara would have won the election to the presidency, and his narrative would have inspired a lot of young guys out there who are trying hard in tough situations, and sent them a clear message, that if you work hard in life, and play by the rules i.e. ruleof law, nothing will stop you from achieving your dreams and goals no matter how high a bar you set for yourself.

2.      Yours econd question hinges on the fact that I claimed that Usu Boie Kamara was the weakest candidate among the serious candidates for the FB position in the SLPP to run against the current APC machine.

In my opinion, and I do not have a crystal ball or insider information, but from purely my political fillers and instincts. First there was a Tejan Kabbah fatigue permeating around SLPP circles, especially due to the mechanism the former president used to arrive at decision making. His style was antiquated, slow and dull for 21stcentury fast paced politics.

His triangulating style of distributing jobs to build the necessary consensus for national unity did not also sit too well with me and a lot of the people I have talked to about the Kabbah legacy. Here is what happened. Mandingoes and Susu’s who migrated to S/Leone pre-independentS/Leone, settled in all the districts in the country. So you had Sesay’s who were mandingo-mende’s. A Sesay who is madingo-temne etc. The mandingo-mende may hail from the Tongo Fields or Panguma or Kenema in the eastern province of S/Leone say. Another mandingo-temne may hail from Mambolo or Makeni. Kabbah will bring in the Sesay from Kenema and give him a deputy ministerial position in the ministry of development and economic planning. Mr. Ibrahim Ibravo Sesay is a case in point. He will also bring in another Sesay from Makeni or Mambolo and give him a deputy ministerial position in the ministry of Health. Mr. Ibrahim Sesay former senior adviser to the Usu Boie campaign is another case in point,so is Mr. Sullay Daramy, Mr. M’baba Kamara, former S/Leone ambassador to Washingtonetc. Do you see the theme or thesis I am trying to develop here? I love this academic thing, thus all of these people have Mandingo undercurrents across S/Leone. Intellectuals like us saw through this cynical attempt at building national unity, and did not like it.

Take the case of my home town the lower Bambara Chiefdom in the Kenema district. The only people who actually benefitted from the Kabbah presidency were the Daramy folks, Sullay Daramy as Protocol Officer to Kabbah and his brother as Minister of Trade and later Economic  Planning and Development. Don’t get me wrong, all of these guys were highly qualified for the positions they occupied during the Kabbah presidency, and I am not jealous of these people. This practice however did not sit too well with the local peopleof the Tongofields where I hail from, as it is their diamonds, coffee and cocao wealth that takes care of these public servants in Freetown.

It was therefore no accident that a local village guy asked me a very serious question one day.He said John, aside from you, most of our other kids who have left here for schools and colleges have come back with good results. However, I have noticed that most of them have only ended up being teachers and policemen. Are these the only jobs available in the country for our kids? I gave him an honest answer, about the political process and the way it is not working for them.

This is the record of the Tejan Kabbah presidency in mendeland. They voted for him as their own son, brother, and father, but they ended up being disappointed in his leadership. So this was the state of mind of the native mende voter in the Tongofields, it might not be a large enough sample to make an informed generalization about this, but I am sure if I were to do some serious research into this, it will reveal some ugly things about this practice.

At the party level, the Kabbah stewardship was very weak. How can he explain the free reign he allowed candidate Ernest Bai Koroma to move around the country with his own militia, composed of formerRUF/AFRC thugs that culminated in the beating to near death of Tom Njuma by the notorious Leather Boot? That incident set the stage for the behavior of these thugs up till today. The Hinga Norman tragedy and Christiana Thorpe’s mismanagement and cancellation of SLPP ballots all point to Kabbah’s negligence of SLPP affairs at a minimum and at worse his connivance with them. One can go onand on.

At the government or macro level though, his policies were well articulated and successful, but a mess at the microlevel.

So due to the aforementioned reasons, UsuBoie Kamara’s candidacy was going to be an easy walk-over for the APC/ErnestBai Koroma machine. Maada Bios candidacy therefore changed the game for Koroma, and his re-election has become an uphill task. How he navigates this hill is unfolding.

John,

Usu is definitely educated, but he was not the most educated of the 19 FBs. Usu only has a masters degree in Mining Engineering. Andrew Keili is a mining Engineer as well, and he has a double masters degree. Keili is more successful than Usu, and he has spent his entire life in the private sector.

Usu has spent almost his entire life as a public servant. The man served as deputy director of mines for more than 15 years and became director of mines for more than 10 years. Usu became filthy rich during this period, and your claim that he is/was not as corrupt as other corrupt politicians is laughable. Usu was definitely not a flamboyant civil servant, and he carried out elaborate schemes in the mines ministtry. I met him in California when he came to address SLPPNA. The man can barely speak English despite his admirable credentials.

Aftreall, Maada Bio too is a masers degree holder. There were PHD degree holders, and people with tremendous experience. My Kono brother, Dr. Komba Morie Manyeh is a respectable PHD holder , and he was one of the 19. Usu is/was definitely not the most educated, and the man lacks credibilty.

He is not trustworthy at all, and if Usu was victoriuos, that would have been disatrous for your party. Usu told us here that the APC and Koroma are bad for salone, and that the APC have a lot of spies in the SLPP. This was after he lost the FB contest to Bio. Well, look at where he is today.

The man is bereft of simple honesty, and I am glad that he will never be president of salone. As useless as EBK is, I will choose him any day over Usu.

Why that? Because he did not provide them with government and cabinet positions?
I felt deep pity for the local village people in Mendeland. It is high time they stop voting for politicians and then expect government jobs from them. College graduates are supposed to be the job creators not ones that compete for limited government jobs.

How can you be disappointed in a leadership that SLPPers argued had a diverse cabinet? Why should they vote for him as their own son, brother, and father? Why not just vote for him as a  son, brother, and father of the nation?
