"If George can Bush bear under Reagan and Mike Pence under crazy Trump, Why can't you be patient." kamara
Kamara, Did Ronald Reagan spat on George Bush's face? Did Trump reign insult on Mike Pence's mother? Do you also expect Dr. KKY to act like thug like Maada and intimidates his opponents? For your information, unlike Maada, Dr. KKY has a name to protect.
Reply with quote #32
Are you implying that Maada Bio spat on Kandeh Yumkella? When and where did this happen? Also, what proof do you have that Maada Bio is a thug? I hope you read what DMK wrote. Your candidate is better off running for parliament or mayor of Freetown. He needs to build his political CV before thinking about the presidency. I don't see any path for him to that position at the moment. He will lose badly in the Southeast and run poorly in the North. And the few votes that he will get in the Western area will not be enough to get him over the hump. Tell your candidate to go back to the SLPP and beg them to accept him. I don't see a Yumkella party winning anything in Salone. The man is not even liked by his brothers and the people in his chiefdom. He spends most of his time in Bo and he has already angered people over there.

Another wishful thinking from a 'Biocrat" Dr. KKY independent candidate just won a local election in the Chiefdom. Next Biocrat, please!!

"Dr. KKY independent candidate just won a local election in the Chiefdom. Next Biocrat, please!!" Ishmael Yillah Ishmael, I am not in the business of name calling. I am APC, so I don't see how I can be a Biocrat. How does an independent candidate become a KKY candidate? Remember, the SLPP did not participate in those elections, which means that SLPP members may have voted for the victorious independent candidate. This is what I foresee with KKY forming a party. The APC and the SLPP will gang up on him. 'Den go bote tam.' The two major tribal blocs - Themnes and Mendes are either APC or SLPP. Raw tribalism will be on display and some will even call KKY a Guinean. That is Salone politics, my brother.

Tribal politics is a thing of the past, bro. Come 2018, most of the themnehs and moderate mendes will vote KKY. Do you think Themnehs are happy the way the country has been run by EBK?
Reply with quote #36
Enjoyment Man, "If Yumkella cannot deal with your perceived lethal weapons in the SLPP, how would he survive the dangerous missiles of the APC?" By African Politics He will need the full support a 100% SLPP behind him to deal with the APC. He cannot afford to deal with the APC while a faction if the SLPP is against him. Remember this, "United we stand" and "divided we fall".
Reply with quote #37
Have you reflected on why the Themnes and moderate Mendes did not support KKY in the SLPP? Why would they support him outside of the SLPP? Somano Kapen, Alie, Bangura and Abass Bundus are Themnes in the SLPP executive. Why didn't they support KKY? Have there ever been rallies in Bombali, Tonkolili or Port-Loko for KKY? And do you think KKY has any support in the Southeast? KKY didn't want to contest the SLPP elections because he was afraid of losing by a wide margin. You believe that tribal politics is a thing of the past in elections in Salone? Hahahaha!!! You must be day dreaming, my friend. Tell me anybody that will win a presidential election in Salone that does not have Themne, Mende or Limba blood? Keep dreaming my friend.

"KKY suspending his campaign for the SLPP flag is an interesting move. He hasn't left the party and so has the advantage of being affiliated to one of the major parties but at the same time has given himself some room for manoeuvre."-DMK DMK, this so call advantage is not going to bode well for Yumkella if he is not very careful. He has been misled by the few people around him. The SLPP current constitution considers anti party activity as an "expulsionable" offence. And whet is classed as anti party activities include campaigning against the party in an election. Yumkella will eventually be expelled or suspended if he starts promoting his candidacy outside tof he SLPP or if he supports a person standing against an SLPP candidate. Unlike Dr. Bernadette Lahai (One of Kandeh's few supporters in parliament) who nominated a none legal APC parliamentarian for the post of Speaker of Parliament against her party candidate who has PhD in Law and has been a long standing member of the bar in Sierra Leone, I do not see the APC Judiciary blocking the expulsion of Dr, Yumkella from the SLPP if the party deem him as conducting anti-party activities. Bernadette Lahai was protected by Judge Charm now Chief Justice because the APC needed her in parliament as leader of the opposition to rubber stamp their nefarious programs. And she has been very good at it while feigning that she has been ineffective because of Brigadier Bio's Supporters. It is simply corruption. Dr Kandeh Yumkella on another hand would be seem by the APC as someone who will steal their votes in Kambia if he is allowed to forge ahead with his political activities. So the APC would likely support the SLPP to reduce his ambition. We will wait and see what God has in store for him that we ordinary men and women have not seen.

Thanks for the usual brilliant analysis. I was thinking along your line of thinking when I stated that: "The APC and the SLPP will gang up on him. 'Den go bote tam.'"Yumkella will only be effective if he is somehow aligned with either the SLPP or the APC. Otherwise, I see his campaign buried before he even started. The man's political base is weak.

Fil Bothi, you are of course right in that KKY has chosen a very difficult path. If he manages to pull together a coalition that can take him to second place then he stands a good chance in the run off. However he has not yet attracted the high profile endorsements you would have expected when he announced the suspension of his SLPP campaign. In fact in his position I would choreography the endorsements if I have them.
His only chance is to be more SLPP than the remaining SLPP candidates. By that I mean he needs to show rank and file members that he can help candidates win Ward and parliamentary seats, especially in the North and West.

"If he manages to pull together a coalition that can take him to second place then he stands a good chance in the run off" DMK
DMK, It depends on the percentage of votes that the first place candidate gets. If, for example, the first place candidates gets 52% of the votes, then there will be no run-ff. Indeed, Yumkella has chosen a difficult path. If he forms a new party, he will lose to the SLPP in the Southeast and lose to the APC in the North. He will be competitive in the Western area but that will not be enough to win the presidency. Our folks vote mainly on the basis of ethnicity.
Reply with quote #42
Dr. KKY has done his homework, do not write him off so soon. The north is not all APC and the tough economic condition on the ground is making many APC supporters/voters unhappy. And SLPP shouldn't write him off either because votes in salone are up for sale to the highest bidder. He may not have a strong base, but he will sure pull votes from all corners of Salone. Do not underestimate him!!
Reply with quote #43
I have to agree with Ishmael Yillah on the first point - people in the north are very unhappy with APC but I can't see how Kandeh Yumkella can win even in an election of 30 candidates. Even diehard places like Tonkoili are fed up. The problem APC is going to have this election is that the young are well-informed and are engaging due to social media and the illiterate oldies are dying off. All parties are going to need to choose fairly young candidates who will engage with people via social media. As things stand right now Maada Bio has the upper hand. No one in SLPP has the guts to unseat him and the only people talking about being candidate in APC are people without much support. I still don't see Maada Bio winning though because by the looks of things he is less popular now than he was in 2012 and he lost in the first round then.

Sierra Leone is yet to get that transformational leader that will fight for the impoverished masses. Kandeh Yumkella is not the one. He is very close to the APC and its leader Ernest Koroma. This makes a lot of people uncomfortable with him.
There are reports that Yumkella had initially wanted to run for flag bearer of the APC. But the APC as we all know will never stand for that rubbish - a guy showing up from nowhere and attempting to hijack the party. With no chance with the APC, Yumkella pitched tent with the SLPP with no ounce of sincerity relative to loyalty to the party. So when that transformational leader emerges in Sierra Leone, he will get support from all corners of the country. As things stand, I will be surprised if Yumkella gets 10% of the votes in a presidential election. People don't trust him.

Momodu, Dr. KKY is most trusted candidate in salone and vast majority of the youth believes in his vision and ideas. Many northerners were against him because of his affiliation with SLPP, but now that he has severed ties with SLPP, many young north-westerners are joining his camp in droves. People in the north-west are against SLPP, not Dr. KKY. Also, in the recent bye-election in the Bombali Sherbora chiefdom (Makeni), Mohamed Kamarainba almost defeated the mighty APC party in their backyard. This is unthinkable five years ago. Do not write off DR. KKY. Na Mende man and Limba man dem get party na Salone. Thaimneh man na swing voter. Limba man na APC e dae even way d limba area poor and underdeveloped. Na d same thing for mende man with slpp.

Two things: 1. You are young and naïve. 2. You don't live in Sierra Leone. Those of us on the ground know what's happening. You folks in the Diaspora are not even going to vote. So what you say does not matter. Kandeh Yumkella needs the SLPP more than ever before. The majority of SLPP members are loyal to their party and not to personalities. By leaving the party, Yumkella was followed only by his Susu and Mandingo tribesman. They are minorities and cannot impact elections results in a major way in Salone. The Themne vote will be split between the APC and ADP. Themnes will not vote for a Susu man they don't trust. And making matters worse is the fact that Yumkella's small group of followers is turning off voters with their utterances.

Momodu, The Thaimnehs have voted for Loko and limba candidates, so why can't they vote for their closest relative in Salone-the sousous? The Thaimeh are more closer to the Sousou people than to any other tribe in Sierra Leone. Remember, the Thaimnehs are 'Landoma' speaking people from Guinea and they have lived together with the Sousou for centuries. You may be on the ground in Sierra Leone but your analysis is a bit skewed.

Themnes don't consider sousous their relatives. Sousous, Mandigoes and Fulas are considered outsiders in Salone. You know that very well. Themnes have voted for Lokos and Limbas because Lokos and Limbas are APC.

That's not true, Sir! The last time I checked, the current APC secretary General, Osman Yansaneh is Sousou, the majority leader in parliament, Dumbuya is also Sousou from Kaffu Bullom but he was elected to parliament by the majority temne residents in Lungi. The northern tribes are do discriminate against each other, Sir! With regards to the south-east, Dr. KKY can use money to infiltrate there. If APC can use money to infiltrate the 'mende land', Dr. KKY can do the same. Either way, SLPP is doomed without KKY.

Why are you so insecure about your candidate? Just last week you were SLPP. You ceased being SLPP on Monday when your candidate suspended his campaign. Thus, to you, anybody that even remotely criticizes your candidate is SLPP and a supporter of Bio. This logic is very flawed. BTW I have never been SLPP in my life and have never voted for that party. I am independent and I am waiting for the right candidate to emerge before I will jump on the band wagon. I am also not from the Southeast but I do visit often on business trips. Yumkella is not a rich man as you may think. Second, even if he had money and bribed Southeasterners, they will take his money but will not vote for him. Instead they will vote for Maada Bio. He is their own. The reason why Southeasterners voted for Tejan Kabbah en masse was because even though Kabbah was Mandingo, his mother was Mende. Kabbah was born in Kailahun. So he was a Southeasterner. Suffice it that it is Yumkella that needs the SLPP and not the way round. He knows that very well and that is why he did not quit the party. He only suspended his campaign.

The bottom line is SLPP needs Yumkella to clinch victory and Yumkella needs SLPP if he wants to have a chance of being President of Sierra Leone. For SLPP to win , they need to win their strongholds by 80%, the North by 40% and Freetown by 60%. Freetown is the decider. A yumkella ,Bio ticket will definitely yield victory for SLPP. Yes, the Themnes and other northerners are tired of APC. If SLPP can put forth a new blood candidate , Freetown and the North will vote for SLPP. Yes, Yumkella has to be patient. Running away, will not garner him victory. George Bush was not physically threatened by Regan as there is rule of law in the US . I can guarantee that there were non physical threats that made George Bush tow the party line. Again, Politics is a blood sports, You have to be willing to fight till the end. Talk about cursing opponents. How many insults did crazeman Trump hurl at his opponents. Ted Cruz's father involved in the JFK's death. Ted Cruz's wife looks. Carly Fioirina's Looks

Eloquent analysis. But I believe that the ship has sailed. SLPP and Yumkella are not a good fit. If reports that Yumkella had sought APC leadership before pitching tent with the SLPP are true, then the man cannot be good leader of the SLPP. Yumkella and the SLPP are better off being apart. No man is indispensable to the existence of the globe.
Reply with quote #60
You are right then , I was unaware that Yumkella had previously sent the APC leadership. This makes him another retired UN opportunist like the late Tejan Kaba. SLPP needs to try attract voters from Freetown. Without a clear victory in Freetown, SLPP cannot win the presidency.
