Kandeh Yumkella never tried to join APC. It's a lie. Some people have been trying to find things with which to tarnish him. Also there are some people out there who don't believe people of different political persuasions ought to be friends or work together. Kandeh Yumkella certainly tried to work with the APC government on energy and other matters but all for the good of Salone. In 2010, Sylvanus EBK's brother asked to marry Yumkella's niece (his sister's daughter). The families became close but the wedding ultimately never happened. The Yumkellas will always be SLPP.

Politics anywhere is a dirty game. Your enemies are quick to define you negatively. Kandeh Yumkella may not have sought the APC leadership but his close friendship with Ernest Koroma coupled with his softness on the APC cost him the presidency of Sierra Leone. Whether Yumkella stays with the SLPP or forms his own party, he just will not win the Southeastern vote. This has nothing to do with his ethnicity. But on the basis of his close friendship with Ernest Koroma, he is simply not trusted by Southeasterners. Thus, losing the South, East and North pretty much buries Yumkella's candidacy.

Dr. KKY is the next president of Salone, that I can tell you right now. Maada can continue to carry brief for EBK for his daily survival, but KKY will never stoop down to that level.

Salone Baby please do not try spinning the aborted political courtship that EBK and KKY had. Here is the irrefutable account of what happened.
EBK visited Vienna when KKY was DG for UNIDO. The dull fella was so impressed with KKY’s strategic networking abilities and eloquence that he flirted with the idea that KKY may make a great heir apparent. After a farewell dinner organized by KKY, a very tipsy EBK [who drank 2 bottles of Trockenbeerenauslese wine that night] promised KKY the Presidency after he [EBK] finished his second term. Ritart Konteh was there and has verified.
This was one of the key reasons KKY did not contribute a penny to SLPP from 2007 till 2015 when he started his multiple party registration cover-up in the Diaspora. In the smart fella’s egoistic mind, how could he become President if SLPP won in 2012? Show me an iota of evidence that KKY supported SLPP in 2012 elections or was even a registered member and I will show you a liar
Anyways…moving on… years after Vienna meeting, KKY kept hope alive… and played his part. For those that listened to his interview on Tam Bayoh’s Monolgue in 2013, he set himself an impossible task of feigning to be apolitical. His political naivety unraveled when he was cornered by Tam to categorically but unnecessarily state that he had neither registered as an SLPP member nor voted in any elections in Salone. This was too much information and his political immaturity had the better of him during the said interview. KKY was playing the quintessential indecisiveness he is becoming known for. He wanted to have his cake and eat it at the same time. Had he said he was SLPP, his hopes of leading APC would have been dashed. So he stalled and muddled through a rushed radio interview, he should never had given.
EBK floated the idea of recruiting KKY as a successor, and sources close to APC NAC say their responses were unprintable. EBK was warned to immediately cease disrespecting his “comrades” like that. “
What is wrong with APC members who have toiled for the party?” some asked; “ Are we not fit to lead our own party… that you have to import a stranger to come and lord over us”? Respect yourself Mr President “added one senior NAC member.
EBK’s proposition for a KKY succession was dead on arrival. He however did not convey this bad news to KKY in time which caused that unnecessary interview with Tam Bayoh. SLPP critics who listened to the show were later not impressed when KKY decided to skip member registration and go straight for the Flag.

@ Diplomatic Agent,
Thanks for throwing light on this issue once again. It is apparent that the APC were waiting for KKY to win the SLPP flag bearer elections before embarrassing him for his duplicity. Reliable sources intimate that even after registering with the SLPP, KKY was always the last of the flag bearer contestants to contribute money to an SLPP cause. @ Ismael Yillah, You can resort to all the name calling that you want but you are not going to silence anybody. Have you been living on the ground, you would have known that what Diplomatic Agent wrote was true. KKY's duplicity is no secret in Sierra Leone. Hence he will never win any elections in Sierra Leone. Take this from an independent voter like me.

Another pa-o-pa wishful thinker. While you all (pa-0-pas) are busy writing lies and innuendos against Dr. Yumkella, his campaign team is making inroads in the South-East. With regard to APC, I can understand their sudden jittery about Dr. KKY.

KKY has never sought to even join APC. Those are lies. Richard Konteh? Puhlease! The man does not have an ounce of truth come out his mouth. A well known crook? We all speculate about what EBK is thinking but he never tells anyone. As to him getting drunk, that is also a lie as he is too paranoid about being poisoned/killed. He doesn't even eat food cooked in his kitchen

I admire you for relentlessly defending your candidate. Personally, I will be glad to see Kandeh Yumkella make it to the presidency. But he must not expect any free lunches. Like the other candidates, he must go through the rigid scrutiny of the electorate. Ours is a democracy that elects instead of selecting candidates for political office. Good luck to your candidate.

How sad, it seems the APC are set to lead government for another five years. I think the sorry truth is that so long as Bio is alive (and he is young) and wants to lead the party, he will be the flagbearer and no one will be able to displace him. Because candidates from Salone and the diaspora, like Yumkella, choose to challenge him, the SLPP will lose every time. They cannot win without a party leadership and elites united behind one candidate. Those who want the SLPP to govern should get behind Bio, put their own political aspirations aside if they do not want APC to win elections. I am not saying that Yumkella and others are not better candidates, but merely speaking to the political reality. All politics are local.

Well said. I wish SLPP folks will listen to a person like you. If Bio cannot be defeated in the SLPP (Bio has a solid grassroots support in the party) , then SLPP folks should rally behind him for victory over the APC.

Ishmael Yillah Salone will never repeat that terrible mistake made in 1996 by electing Kabba who was not only from a minority tribe but a foreigner also. KKY as a Susu is a minority and it is no secret that like the Fulahs and Madingos, the Susus always consider themselves Guineans and will always prefer Guinea over Salone any day. This has been proven several times especially during football matches between Salone and Guinea whether at club level or national team level. Most Susus, Fulahs and Madingos exploit Salone to develop Guinea which is a clear indication that they are ready to relocate anytime there is chaos in Salone as was evident during the rebel war. KKY will never rule Salone! Infact noboby from those three groups will be given such chance anymore.

It is not Maada Bio that conducts elections in the SLPP. It is the executive body of the SLPP in collaboration with the National Electoral Commission that are responsible for that. KKY does not have grassroots support in the SLPP and therefore cannot defeat Bio. This is why KKY has suspended his campaign. There are many things working against KKY's candidacy. He is new to the SLPP - two years, he has been out of Sierra Leone for years, and he comes from a minority ethnic group, which many voters consider not Sierra Leonean. KKY needs to forget about 2018 and start working toward 2023. Plain and simple.

Bambara, There is no difference Maada Bio and the executive because Bio runs the show and nothing go through the executive without his blessings. With regard to Dr. KKY's ethnicity, Osman Yansaneh, Abdulai O Conteh and Dumbuya (Majority Leader of parliament) are all sousou but no one considers them 'foreigners.'

Ishmael, Bambara is right. The folks you mentioned above are not running for the presidency. When you attempt to become president of a country, people will throw all types of dirt on you. The average Sierra Leonean voter is not educated. As such, ethnicity matters a lot to him/her. This explains why Maada Bio cannot be beaten in the SLPP. And since Ernest Koroma is not running next year, Bio has a big chance of winning the presidency. It will be wise for Kandeh Yumkella to support Bio,

Ish et al, please be honest for a change. KKY cannot beat Bio in an SLPP contest... even if Mother Theresa [may her blessed soul RIP] conducted that elections. Here are some irrefutable facts:
Bio has been in fulltime politics for over a decade. He first ran for SLPP leadership in 2005 and has stayed very active in the party since. He has been gradually amassing grassroots supporters and potential delegates over the years. Mind you, the political dynamics of core delegates hardly changes significantly over one election cycle. More often than not, delegates are people who sacrifice for the party as well as make time to run for elective office - whether at ward, council, constituency, district, regional or national levels. Most are voted in for their evidenced association and verifiable track record of support to the party. Let us face the fact, KKY, as functionally competent as he may be has none of these political capital. He is indecisive, politically naive and very egocentric. Shaking hands with Arnold Schwarzenegger or having private dinners with Ban Ki Moon means nada to the electorates in Salone. This lame excuse that KKY is popular in SLPP/Salone and can beat Bio is verily dishonest at the very least. Even the so-called Alliance Flag Bearer contestants could not corronate KKY as their leader. This was mainly because the man's only claim to the party was his father and brother. Hitherto wanting to be President, he had shown no alliance or empathy for SLPP during his entire adult life. For crying out loud, even KKY's elder brother who registered him as a member does not believe he has paid his dues and can beat Bio. It is only a few megalomaniac Diaspora/tribal fanatics or the Kambia Mafia, like Yilla, who keep latching on this political wet-dream of theirs. Most, like KKY, are opportunitists, have no genuine or proven track record of recent party contributions. They just feel entitled to lead because of sheer arrogance. Most have never voted in Salone elections. Bio can beat KKY in SLPP without need to campaign. KKY could not even convince Andrew Keili to support him. This was his school mate way back when. So please Yilla stop distracting SLPP. The true SLPPer always stays to fight another day. The opportunists like Usu Boie, John Leigh and Franklin Rogers can be smelled from quite a distance. They are unreliable and very shifty. They are capable of even joining the RUFP if it gives them a day or 2 behind a microphone. KKY should stop this self destructive arrogance and accept defeat. Only a fool will believe that he can beat Bio in any form of elections in Salone!

Today in Salone we have five tribes that are eligible to run for the office of the POSAL (President Of SALONE) and these are:Temnes, Mendes, Limbas, Lokkos and Sherbros and to some extent the Krios. Besides these six president-worthy groups all others are considered alien.Unfortunately for KKY, he happens to fall outside this axis of the eligibles and that automatically disqualifies him.

The issue is timing and Patience. Yumkella has to wait his time. Bio and Yumkella will make a formidable ticket. They should work together. I know yumkella may be have second thoughts about giving up his UN jo; He is not the first African to have sacrificed his future for politics.
He needs to be patient. Bio may win the SLPP flag bearer mantle but SLPP is not Sierra Leone. Remember Hillary Clinton in 2016. Bio has to be able to win outside SLPP's southeastern strongholds to be successful. African politics like others in multi ethic democracies is based on ethnicity. People vote for people they have something in common with. I do not see the north and Freetown coming out for Bio. He needs to win 60% of Freetown to win. SLPP's ultimate is to defeat APC. If they really care about the future, they should united and prevent the corrupt APC from governing Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone has been plagued by crises when APC is in power. From economic malaise, blatant corruption, violent unopposed election, rebel war crisis to th Ebola crisis. Do you want more of this? Continue with the infighting.

Kamara, Kandeh Yumkella did not give up his UN job for Salone politics. His term of service expired. He had served the maximum two terms as Director-General of UNIDO. Maada Bio does not have to pick Yumkella as running mate. There are many other credible Northerners that Bio can tap.

Kamara your logic has been clouded by naivety and small-time politicking. Was our country a paradise during the Kabba's ten years or Milton Margai's three years or tribalistic and one-party-inclined Albert Margai's three years? Provide solid evidence if your answer is YES. Sierra Leone has been plagued by crises when APC is in power. From economic malaise, blatant corruption, violent unopposed election, rebel war crisis to th Ebola crisis. The last time I checked thousands died of cholera during Kabba's tenure and there was corruption of epic proportions. During the Margai's tenures there was massive and inexplicable insecurity due to cannibalism which was even worse than ebola.

AOSLPP AKA Musa Kenema,
I am more comfortable referring to you by your real moniker, Musa Kenema. You cannot revise history, my friend. Sierra Leone has never been a paradise in any time in history. But before Siaka Stevens assumed office in 1968, the Sierra Leonean economy was the fastest growing in West Africa. Thuggery and violence in politics was unheard of and public officials were proud of discharging their functions without resorting to blatant corruption. Siaka Stevens and the APC changed the fortunes of Salone. They brutalized innocent Sierra Leoneans, introduced elections fraud and pilfered public funds at a rate unheard of before. This blatant corruption and violence in our polity caused the civil war, which was started by Foday Laimpay Sankoh, an APC man from Tonkolili. Tejan Kabbah and the SLPP brought peace to Salone and built the economy only for Ernest Koroma and the APC to destroy. They did not stop there but also brought Ebola to Salone. So Kamara is right. All the tragedies that have befallen Salone have been during the tenure of APC. Is that a coincidence my friend?
