In 1462 Pedro da Cintra discovered Sierra Lyoa, meaning LION MOUNTAIN.


On 1st January, 1808 Sierra Leone became a British crowned colony and the colony was named the whites man's grave. One hundred and fifty-three (153) British died of malaria. If you minus 1961 from 1808 you will have one hundred and fifty-three years (153). So our forefathers were enslaved by the British for one hundred and fifty-three years (153).


The Maroon Church at Siaka Stevens Street was built in 1808.


On 8th August, 1816 King George the fifth purchased the said land at Krootown Road/Kroobay from Saunders Brook to Alligator River from Elli Akim and gave it to the Kroo Tribes Men as a gift.


In 1910 the Law Court building at Siaka Stevens Street was built.


In 1914 the Pademba Road Correction Centre was built by Governor Mayweather.


In 1920 the first motor vehicle was seen in Sierra Leone.


In 1930 diamond was discovered in Kono.


The Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) was founded on Friday 27th April, 1951.


The All People's Congress (APC) was founded on Sunday 11th September, 1960.


On Thursday 27th April, 1961 Sierra Leone gained her Independence from Great Britain and her first Prime Minister was Sir. Milton Margai.


In 1964 Sir. Milton Margai had his demised and his younger brother Sir. Albert Margai assumed the office of the Prime Minister and he became the second Prime Minister of Sierra Leone.


In 1964, Sir. Albert Margai changed the British West African pounds currency to Leones.


In November 1964, Siaka Stevens became Mayor of Freetown Municipality under the ticket of the All People's Congress (APC).


In 1965, Issac Theophilus Akuna Wallace-Johnson ( I.T.A Wallace-Johnson) died in Ghana.


In 1967, Sir. Albert Margai attempted a one party State but failed.


On 23th March, 1967 General Elections Siaka Stevens won the election and was overthrown by Brigadier Lansana.


In 1968, Siaka Stevens was reinstated and sworn in as the third Prime Minister of Sierra Leone.


On 19th April, 1971 Sierra Leone became a Republic State and Siaka Probyn Stevens became the first executive President of the Republic of Sierra Leone.


In 1978, we had a one party State legislated in Parliament by the All People's Congress (APC).


On 28th November, 1985 Siaka Probyn Stevens the longest serving leader handed over the mantle of leadership to Major General Dr. Joseph Saidu Momoh.


In 1987, Vice President Francis Mischek Minah and others were arrested and tried in the Court of law for an alleged coupe and the Court ruling was death penalty by hanging. They were executed after several appealed for mercy.


On Saturday 23rd March, 1991 in Kailahun the first gunned shot of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) was heard.


On Wednesday 29th April, 1992 the All People's Congress (APC) lead Government headed by Major General Dr. Joseph Saidu Momoh was overthrown by the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC) headed by Captain Valentine Melvin Esegrabo Strasser.


In 1992, The execution of Inspector General of Police Mbambay Kamara and others was an extrajudicial killing done by the then National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC).


In 1996, Captain Valentine Melvin Esegrabo Strasser was overthrown in a palace coupe by his Deputy Captain Julius Maada Bio and we had the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC) two (2).


In February, 1996 General Elections Dr. Ahmed Tajan Kabba of the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) emerged victorious.


On Sunday 25th May, 1997 the Sierra Leone People's Party lead Government headed by Dr. Ahmed Tajan Kabba was overthrown by the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) headed by Major Johnny Paul Koroma.


On Monday 18th August, 1997 Students of various Colleges/Universities demonstrated against the illegitimate government of the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC). Some students were reportedly killed.


In May, 1998 Dr. Ahmed Tajan Kabba was reinstated by ECOMOG Troops.


On Wednesday 6th January, 1999 Freetown was invaded by disgruntled disbanded army officers called themselves Westside Boys. Hundreds of civilians were massacred.

 

On Monday 8th May, 2000 Unarmed demonstrators went to the leader of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) resident on a peaceful demonstration organized by some civil society organizations. Twenty-two (22) demonstrators were killed by the bodyguards of the then Revolutionary United Front (RUF) leader Corporal Sabanah Sankoh.

 

In 2002, President Dr. Ahmed Tejan Kabba declared the end of the eleven (11) years senseless war.


In 2002, General Elections Dr. Ahmed Tejan Kabba of the Sierra Leone People's (SLPP) emerged victorious and and Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma of the All People's Congress (APC) became minority leader in the house of Parliament.

 

In 2007, General Elections Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma of the All People's Congress (APC) locked horns with Mr. Solomon Ekuma Berewa of the Sierra Leone People's Partly. Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma emerged victorious after a second round of voting.

 

In 2012, General Elections Rtd. Brigadier Julius Maada Bio of the Sierra Leone People's Party locked horns with His Excellency Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma of the All People's Congress (APC) emerged victorious in his second inning as President of the Republic of Sierra Leone.


2018 General Elections is forthcoming.
