Kenyan MPs criticised for 'wasteful' US trip
Kenyan parliamentarians are being criticised for wasting public funds by going on a US trip estimated to cost $1m (£823,000), local Daily Nation newspaper reports.

The 85 legislators and their staff are attending the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) in Nashville, Tennessee.

Their travel, accommodation and daily stipend are being covered by taxpayers.

NCSL says on its website that it "helps [US] states remain strong and independent by giving them the tools, information and resources to craft the best solutions to difficult problems".

Country music star Dolly Parton is among speakers at the event which will also feature prominent politicians, writers and US political pundits.

Kenya has sent the biggest delegation at the conference, which aims to have about 5,000 delegates from around the world, Daily Nation reports.

Nigeria has sent a delegation of 20, it adds.

Other countries have sent between one and six delegates.

The paper also says that the MPs - who are accompanied by the speakers of both the National Assembly and Senate - will earn between $630 and $725 in daily allowances.

It says the trip comes at a time when President Uhuru Kenyatta is proposing cuts to foreign travel as part of austerity measures.

Parliament is this week spending tens of millions of shillings to pay for the flights and accommodation of a delegation of 85 legislators and members of staff, the largest in the world, to attend a dubious legislative assembly in Nashville, Tennessee. https://epaper.nationmedia.com
