After all, if every economic issue is framed as a struggle between a hard-working white middle class and undeserving minorities, then workers of all shades will be left fighting for scraps while the wealthy withdraw further into their private enclaves - Barack Obama

We all talk about the economy, the value of the Leone, the cost of living, Inflation etc. but what is your solution? Where are the economists amongst us?

For me, the typical World Bank/IMF solutions of deregulation, reduction in government spending, increases in taxation are not the solution or at least not the whole solution.

I think we need to invest in sectors of the economy, by borrowing if we have to, that create the most jobs and generate products that can be exported and hence help decrease the imports coming into the country. These include agricultural products such as rice, sugar, flour, eggs, milk and poultry as well as some basic manufacturing, especially building materials such as cement, simple iron bars etc.

Done well, this could reduce inflation, create jobs and result in parastatals that can be privatised at some point.

What would you do to boost the economy?

By some estimates there are over 200,000 Sierra Leoneans gainfully employed in the diaspora. If each of us were able, over the next 2-3 years, to create some small enterprise back home that employs 5 currently unemployed youth, we could wipeout the huge youth unemployment almost overnight.

Some are already doing this of course but imagine if we all could?

Great idea.  Why not lead a project that could work towards the realization of that dream?

Action Man,

I have in the past employed 10 people but we had to wind that effort down mainly because I wasn't on the ground often enough or long enough. It's something I'm thinking of again.

Great idea.  Please inform the Bintumani family any time you want to start any project in Salone.  I am in Salone three times a year.  You and I can work together.

That is a great question. I will say invite as many as 50 forward thinking people that understand ideas of job creation with economic models and technical expertise.
